Rustic, imperfect, and filled with the character of fire, this small handcrafted tea bowl recalls the practical beginnings of Jian ware nearly one thousand years ago.
Its open form has a visibly irregular profile, gently uneven rim, and roughly finished foot. These features have not been polished away or disguised; they preserve the marks of hand-forming and traditional wood firing, giving the bowl an aged, elemental appearance.
The glaze moves from smoky olive and moss green around the rim into deep translucent brown and nearly black tones across the walls. Fine suspended flecks, subtle surface variation, and traces of the firing process remain visible throughout. The exterior is especially dark and glossy, contrasting with the coarse exposed clay and kiln deposits surrounding the foot.
At the bottom of the bowl, an unexpected glaze bloom erupts in swirling blue, turquoise, green, yellow, and gold. Its chaotic pattern resembles flame, moss, mineral deposits, or a tiny landscape created entirely by the kiln.
This is not a cup defined by modern uniformity. Its asymmetry, rough finishing, firing marks, and unpredictable glaze are central to its rustic character and make it feel connected to pottery’s earliest functional traditions.
